‘What we eat’- Part 1

‘You are a food blogger, you must eat out all the time?’ Actually no, we Don’t. I thought writing about what we do would be an interesting insight away from the typical ‘Food Blogger Problems’ type posts.

A recent effort to clear out our kitchen before moving got me thinking about what we eat at home and wondering if we have any repetition. It’s a bit of a standing joke at work that I go through phases where I want to eat the same food over and over again. Recent examples include eating tofu for lunch for a week, snacking on cornichons with every meal, buying a box of Tunnocks teacakes and then painstakingly smoothing out all of the wrinkles in the foil and my latest habit of compulsively eating Weetabix for breakfast everyday despite never been hugely enamoured with them previously.

I also end up in long discussions about why I don’t want a microwave in our house and why visiting my parents always means eating biscuits with a cup of tea because I refuse to have them at home- not because I am a food snob, but because I just can’t stop myself eating them. I suppose, what I really mean is that I’ve been thinking about what we eat, why we eat it and whether we could do anything differently.

This is what we had in our freezer when I did my ‘eat it before we move’ audit:

I was actually quite surprised to realise how much stuff we make from scratch without even thinking about it, when I started thinking about writing this post it felt a little ‘pretentious foodie’ but the more I thought about it, the more I realised this is just how we eat and for us its easy and gives us the most choice. I appreciate that this isn’t for everyone for a multitude of reasons but just clearing out the freezer had already made me think about new things we could make rather than what meals were already waiting there for us. It does mean that we have to plan ahead a little to defrost things but our schedules are pretty busy and we tend to need to buy vegetables every few days anyway so it helps to think ahead.

Looking through what we had (and making a list before we went to the supermarket) made me realise how often we rebuy the same thing not knowing we already have it in the freezer, (lamb for example) We try to buy our fish at the Birmingham market so we often buy in bulk (hence all of the mackerel) and we don’t tend to freeze vegetables unless we have an excess – in all honesty, the fruit is normally there as a gin garnish. One thing that isn’t evident from this list is that we often batch cook some things but we have been short on space lately! Now that we have sorted things out, there is home-made stock in the freezer again and tomato sauces will be going back in there too as we tend to make extra from the leftover veg. There were quite a few ‘mystery’ boxes hidden in the depths of the freezer, things that had not been labelled or were covered in ice so I was pleased to find I’d defrosted a big batch of prawn curry for lunch one day and later a batch of chilli that had been long forgotten

Going forward, I can’t see there being much change to this, we will make some more curry pastes as they are tasty and make speedy meals. There is a lot of meat and fish but that is more a reflection of us buying things when they are cheap and using fresh vegetables as much as possible. Some of the spices are used occasionally and so freezing them works well, chillies in particular are always on handy as they defrost well and don’t loose their flavour but herbs can be a bit hit and miss, I think blitzing them and freezing in ice cube trays is a better approach going forward rather than just putting them in a bag which is what we do now.

I was going to do part 2 as the fridge but it changes daily with the only constants being a shelf full of condiments and the inevitable selection of cheese which will always be available in our house….
